Last week Copenhagen got a new American restaurant near Tivoli. MAD as they call it, stands for Modern American Diner and has a double meaning since MAD means food in Danish. We like their play on the word and their sense of humor, which is evident when reading the back of the servers t-shirts that plainly say, “I’m MAD.” Are they crazy or are they angry? I am not sure which they are implying, but the servers were neither. They were very friendly, helpful and attentive. MAD offers the best of American diner food; hamburgers and fries, pulled pork with coleslaw, chicken fingers, American beer and root beer too. For breakfast they offer a ridiculous “American” breakfast that I can’t imagine any American even eating, it is soo huge…juice, eggs, bacon, sausage, yogurt, cereal, cheese, bagel, hash browns…the list goes on and the price is 105 DKK. They do however offer smaller breakfasts at a more reasonable price. And they are creative with their pancake offerings letting you get 2, 4 or 6 cakes! Love that for kids! The price for dinners are affordable but you have to order their yummy sides separately…mac and cheese, chili fries and onion rings. Heavenly! Kids are offered a choice of burger and fries, steak and fries or chicken fingers and fries for 70 DKK. I think the price is a bit too high unless you opt for the steak option. [See below for our insiders tip on how to save money on your kids meal!] The food was really tasty and we enjoyed the bustling atmosphere. The kids liked their “mad” but REALLY loved how everyone spoke English there. I think it must be a requirement of the staff.
I do recommend making a reservation online or by calling. We went early at 17:30 in hopes of avoiding a line since we did not have a reservation. But there was a wait. However, after a short 10 minutes, the host was very thoughtful and took us in front of another party without kids. Good play, sir! This place is definitely a MiniCPH “Family Friendly Spot”! If you’d like to read another review of MAD, check out our friend traveling mama’s post, she is the one who told me about this new Copenhagen hot spot!
[INSIDERS TIP] Get the appetizer of chicken fingers for 40 DKK ( same quantity as kids meal) and add fries for 25 DKK if you want for the table to share. If you have 2 kidos their meals will cost 80 DKK instead of 140 DKK!
